Salesforce account teams limitations
Salesforce Account Teams let you add members with roles and access levels to an account, but they are limited to the Account object, never expire on their own, and have no equivalent on custom objects. Flexible Team Share is a free app that keeps the familiar team experience and removes those limits — on any standard or custom object, with temporary access and no code.

Account Teams are a genuinely useful feature: add colleagues to an account, give each a team role and an access level, and optionally define a default team that follows a rep. But teams that work well on Accounts run into a wall the moment your process needs the same thing elsewhere — or needs access that ends on its own. The table below lays out the main limitations of native Account Teams next to Flexible Team Share.

What Account Teams can — and cannot — do
An Account Team is a group of users that work together on an account. Each member gets a team role and an access level (Read or Edit) on that account, and a user can set a default account team that is added to their accounts automatically. That is the whole feature — and it lives only on the Account object. There is no Account Team for Opportunities (they have their own separate team), for Cases, or for any custom object, and the model is hard-wired rather than something an admin can extend.
The limitations that bite at scale
Three gaps show up quickly. First, one object only: account teams do not exist on custom objects or most standard objects, so the rest of your data model has no team feature. Second, no expiry: a member stays on the team until someone removes them by hand, which leaves stale access behind contractors and temporary collaborators. Third, inconsistency: Account Teams, Opportunity Teams, and Case Teams are three separate models with three UIs, so admins and users learn the same idea three times and still have nothing for custom objects.
How Flexible Team Share removes the limits
Flexible Team Share applies one team model to any object that supports sharing. An admin enables team support per object through a point-and-click wizard, then adds the Object Team Member component to the record page — so a custom Project gets the same team experience as an Account. Adding a member creates the share automatically; removing them revokes it. You can grant temporary access that expires on its own and keep the team in sync when ownership changes via Flow or Apex. It is 100% free on AppExchange with no limits on objects, teams, or members.
Frequently asked questions
What are the main limitations of Salesforce Account Teams?
Account Teams only work on the Account object, have no built-in way to expire access, and cannot be added to custom objects. They are also a separate model from Opportunity and Case Teams, so there is no single, consistent team experience across your org.
Can Account Teams be used on other objects?
Not natively — the feature is fixed to Accounts. Flexible Team Share recreates the same team-based sharing on any standard or custom object, so Opportunities, Cases, and your custom objects can all have team members.
Can account team access expire automatically?
Native Account Teams have no expiry — members stay until removed by hand. With Flexible Team Share you add a member with an end date and access is revoked automatically when it passes.
Is Flexible Team Share a replacement for Account Teams?
It is a complement and an extension. You can keep native Account Teams where they work and use Flexible Team Share to bring the same model to every other object, with temporary access and one consistent admin experience.
Is it really free?
Yes. Flexible Team Share is 100% free on Salesforce AppExchange, with unlimited objects, teams, and members — no premium tiers, time-limited trials, or hidden fees.
